Deadlines for Graduate Applications
Application deadline is March 1, and formal decisions about acceptance are made by May for the fall semester. We do not accept students at mid-year.
Applying for Admission
Applicants must submit a University Graduate Application.
Applicants must submit the required Sociology division application materials electronically along with the University Graduate Application or directly to the Graduate Admissions Committee in the Division of Sociology and Anthropology. Required division application materials:
- Sociology Masters Division Application
- A statement of purpose outlining graduate study goals and plans, career plans, research experience, and any special circumstances that need explaining.
- A short sample of your academic writing.
- Three letters of recommendation from people who have direct knowledge of your academic performance and potential for graduate study.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores.
Foreign students for who English is not the native language are required by the University to submit the Test of English As a Foreign Language (TOEFL). WVU accepts either the TOEFL or the IELTS for this purpose. Please see Office of Admissions – English Language Proficiency for more information.
